Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service reported a shooting attack at the entrance to Jerusalem during rush hour on Thursday, resulting in the death of at least one woman. Eight other individuals were wounded in the incident.
“Two terrorists who arrived at the scene in a vehicle armed with weapons fired at civilians at a bus stop, and they were neutralized by security forces and a civilian who were nearby,” Israeli police said.
A large number of ambulances and police converged on the scene and police said they were searching the area to make sure there were no other attackers.
The US ambassador to Israel condemned the shooting.
“Abhorrent terrorist attack in Jerusalem this morning. We unequivocally condemn such brutal violence,” said Ambassador Jack Lew.
Tensions across the region have been spewing amid Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. A truce with militant group Hamas was extended on Thursday morning, facilitating the release of more hostages taken by the group on October 7.
Israel had in turn launched a relentless air and ground operation on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 15,000 people, according to the Palestinian government.
