Patricia Benavides, the attorney general of Peru, stated on Monday in a televised announcement that she intends to file a constitutional case against President Dina Boluarte for the murders of protestors during months of upheaval in the previous year.
After nearly a year-long investigation, this is the attorney general’s first allegation against the president before Congress.
In January, the attorney general’s office first declared that it was investigating Boluarte and cabinet members for “genocide, qualified homicide, and serious injuries.”
At least 40 individuals were killed during the violent clashes between December 2022 and the start of this year, and hundreds others were injured.
