Philippines begins new era of Marcos rule, decades after overthrow

On Thursday, the son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was inaugurated in as president of the Philippines, capping off a dramatic comeback for one of Asia’s most renowned political families, 36 years after it was deposed in a popular rebellion.

Marcos Jr. won a rare landslide win in last month’s election, aided by what opponents regard as a decades-long campaign to change public impressions of a family that lived lavishly at the helm of one of the world’s most renowned kleptocracies.

Marcos Jr. won a rare landslide win in last month’s election, aided by what opponents regard as a decades-long campaign to change public impressions of a family that lived lavishly at the helm of one of the world’s most renowned kleptocracies.

Voters want him to follow through on promises to generate employment and lower consumer costs in a country of 110 million people, nearly a quarter of whom live on less than $2 per day.
