Polish tribunal rules court reform needed to obtain EU funds is unconstitutional

The intention of a new administration to restore relations with Brussels has been complicated by the Constitutional Tribunal of Poland’s ruling on Monday that the country’s judicial reform legislation, which it had to enact in order to receive subsidies from the European Union, was unconstitutional.

Due to differences over Poland’s legal system, Brussels delayed billions of euros in COVID-19 recovery payments from Warsaw and demanded change on matters like judicial independence and renewable energy before granting the money.
