Russia Breaks Daily Coronavirus Fatality Record

During the country’s Delta variant-driven third wave and the implementation of forced vaccination to boost slow take-up, Russia has reported the largest number of coronavirus deaths in a single day since the start of the pandemic.

On Tuesday, Russia’s Covid-19 task force, which counts deaths across the country, registered 652 Covid deaths, breaking the previous high of 635 set at the peak of Russia’s second wave on December 24.

For the second day in a row, St. Petersburg, which is hosting the Euro 2020 football quarter-finals without limitations this week, recorded a record death toll of 119 coronavirus fatalities.

Moscow, the core of Russia’s outbreak, reported 121 Covid deaths just 24 hours after a record-breaking 124 deaths. All restaurants must accept clients who have QR codes verifying their vaccination status, immunity, or negative PCR test findings, and all enterprises must send 30 percent of their unvaccinated employees to remote work.

According to the national Covid-19 information center, a total of 134,545 persons have died as a result of the virus, with the virus being the sole cause of death. The total number of extra deaths in Russia since the outbreak began is estimated to be around 475,000.

On Tuesday, Russia recorded 20,616 new illnesses, raising the total number of cases to nearly 5.5 million.

As the Delta form, which was originally found in India, spreads across the country, officials in Moscow and more than a dozen districts are requiring vaccinations for workers who interface with the public.

According to Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, demand for immunizations has increased since then, with 23 million Russians obtaining at least one vaccine dosage. As a result, several locations have reported vaccination shortages in recent days.
