Russia says West stoking Russophobia, warns it may put ‘enemies in their place’

On Thursday, Russia warned the United States that it possessed the power to put the world’s preeminent superpower in its place, accusing the West of fomenting a crazy Russophobic plot to break Russia apart.

Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president from 2008 to 2012 and currently deputy secretary of the Security Council, said the US has instilled “disgusting” Russophobia in an attempt to bring Russia to its knees.

“It will not work because Russia has the power to put all of our arrogant adversaries in their place,” Medvedev added.

Since Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine, the United States and its European and Asian allies have imposed sanctions on Russian politicians, firms, and businessmen, effectively shutting Russia off from most of the international economy.

President Vladimir Putin claims that the “special military operation” in Ukraine was essential because the US was using Ukraine to threaten Russia and Russia needed to defend itself against Ukraine’s “genocide” of Russian-speaking people.

Ukraine claims to be battling for its survival and that Putin’s charges of genocide are absurd. The West contends that charges that it wants to pull Russia apart are false.

Russia claims that, despite sanctions, it can thrive in the absence of what it sees as a deceptive and decadent West led by the United States. It claims that its attempt to create links with the West following the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991 is now done, and that it would instead focus on developing ties with other nations such as China.
