Russian President Vladimir Putin directed that Russia’s deterrent capabilities, which include nuclear weapons, be placed on high alert, citing threatening rhetoric by NATO leaders and economic penalties imposed on Moscow.

“As you can see, not only do Western countries take unfriendly economic measures against our country – I mean the illegal sanctions that everyone is well aware of – but also the top officials of leading NATO countries allow themselves to make aggressive statements with regard to our country,” Putin said on state television.
