Ukraine’s military intelligence said on Tuesday that Ukrainian forces killed a Russian general in the besieged city of Kharkiv, making him the second top Russian officer killed in the invasion.
Major General Vitaly Gerasimov, Russia’s 41st army’s first deputy commander, was killed on Monday, according to a statement from Ukraine’s defense ministry’s Chief Directorate of Intelligence.
The Russian defense ministry could not be reached for comment right away. The report could not be verified by Reuters.
At the end of February, another Russian general, Andrei Sukhovetsky, who was also a deputy commander of the 41st army, was reported slain.
Ukraine claims to have killed over 11,000 Russian soldiers. Russia has reported the loss of 500 people.
Neither side has revealed the number of Ukrainians killed or injured.
