Shanghai hits key milestone in COVID battle as China cases fall

Shanghai reported no new COVID-19 cases outside quarantine areas on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the city’s struggle to contain the virus, which has paralyzed the city of 25 million people and has Beijing scrambling to prevent a similar calamity.

Scenes of homes and buildings in China’s most populous city being caged to keep inhabitants from fleeing have made international headlines in recent weeks, at a time when most other large cities across the world are learning to live with coronavirus.

Some inhabitants, who have been cooped up at home for more than a month, have struggled to get food and other daily essentials, and have expressed rare public criticism to the government’s severe rules.
