Shanghai’s COVID lockdown drags into 4th week, fears flicker Beijing could be next

The misery of Shanghai’s COVID-19 lockdown entered its fourth week on Monday, as orders for mass testing in Beijing’s largest district sparked fears that the Chinese capital would suffer a similar fate.

In their fight to eradicate the virus, Shanghai authorities said they would reserve the strictest restrictions for smaller areas around confirmed cases, raising hopes among the millions of people who are currently living in strictly quarantined neighborhoods.

In Beijing, all 3.45 million people living or working in the Chaoyang district were ordered to have three tests this week, after authorities warned that the virus had infiltrated the city largely undetected the previous week, with only a few dozen cases reported.
