After a continuous surge in infections over the past 14 days, South Africa may be approaching a fifth COVID-19 infection wave, according to Health Minister Joe Phaahla on Friday.
The provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape, according to Phaahla, are driving the increase in cases. Other than alterations to omicron, he added, health officials had not been notified of any new variants at this point.
