Spain to send 150 reinforcement troops to Latvia

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Spain will send 150 extra troops to Latvia as part of a larger NATO buildup in the Baltic area, the Spanish Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Spain, which currently has 350 troops in NATO’s enhanced advance presence battlegroup in Latvia, is expanding the number in accordance with NATO reaction plans to “preserve peace and security following the invasion.”

NATO battlegroups in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, which were previously governed by Moscow but are now members of the European Union, are expected to nearly quadruple in strength from 3,400 troops at the start of the year to more than 6,000 in the near future.

Spain will send a field artillery Unit, an engineering unit and logistical support personnel, the ministry said.
