Tremors and earthquakes are common events in the country, which sits on a seismically active area within the complex zone of collision between the Eurasian Plate and both the African and Arabian Plates. According to local media in 2020, there were more than 33,000 earthquakes, including 322 4.0 and higher on the Richter scale.
A strong 5.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Turkey, with its epicentre in the western city of Kütahya, the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced on social media. There have been no reports of casualties or damage in the area.
