Sudan Initiative Looks to Form Gov’t of Competencies

Parties allied to the regime of the ousted Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir, have supported an initiative launched by Sufi leader Al-Tayyib Al-Jedd for completing the transitional period in the North African nation.

The initiative proposes starting with round table discussions in mid-August. These discussions will look to form a government of independent competencies and a committee to manage elections in January 2024.

The Original Democratic Unionist Party and the Umma Party are among the first to support Al-Jedd’s initiative.

“The initiative is based on the formation of a government of independent competencies, which arranges for transparent and fair elections,” Al-Jedd told reporters at a presser in Khartoum.

The Sufi sheikh urged political forces of various orientations in Sudan to partake in the initiative which chiefly aims to get the country out of the crisis it is currently experiencing.

Mubarak al Mahdi, the head of the Umma Party, reaffirmed his support for Al-Jedd’s initiative.

“We will do everything in our power to make it a success,” said Mahdi.

“Through this initiative, we seek to agree on new constitutional arrangements, criteria for forming an independent government of national competencies, and a committee that prepares for elections after 18 months,” he added.

The Sufi leader’s initiative came shortly after the Sudanese military announced its withdrawal from talks with civilian authorities.

A tripartite mechanism, consisting of the United Nations, the African Union, and the African Intergovernmental Development Organization (IGAD) had attempted to sponsor talks between the Sudanese military and civilian institutions to end the crisis.

It is noteworthy that local media sources reported that the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, had also welcomed Al-Jedd’s initiative.
