Syria halts flights from and to Damascus, hours after Israeli attack

Syria canceled flights to and from Damascus International Airport on Friday, according to the transport ministry, only hours after Israeli air strikes pounded the capital’s southern outskirts.

According to a Syrian military official published by the state news agency, Syrian air defenses intercepted the Israeli missiles, downing the most of them, although the early morning strike injured one civilian and inflicted material damage.

Cham Wings Airline, a private Syrian carrier, announced that all of its flights will be rerouted to Aleppo International Airport.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Israeli airstrike damaged the runway after it targeted “warehouses of Iranian militants” near the airport.

For several years, Israel has been attacking what it has described as Iranian-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran-backed forces, including Lebanon.
