Turkey needs further help handling Syrian refugees, EU’s Von Der Leyen says

Ursula Von Der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said on Tuesday that the European Union should amend its migration treaty with Turkey, ahead of an EU summit slated to consider its renewal.

“It’s critical that we continue to support Turkey, which is home to 3.7 million Syrian refugees, some of whom have been there for ten years,” von der Leyen said during a visit to Berlin.

“We won’t require as much immediate humanitarian assistance as in the past,” she remarked, “but people must have a sense of perspective.”
