The Pentagon announced on Thursday that the US State Department has cleared the potential sale of 280 AIM-120C air-to-air missiles in a deal for up to $650 million.
The transaction marks the Biden administration’s first significant overseas military sale to Saudi Arabia since assuming office and establishing a policy of providing exclusively defensive arms to the Gulf partner.
The proposed sale was approved by the State Department on Oct. 26, according to a State Department spokesperson, who added that the sale of air-to-air missiles follows “an uptick in cross-border strikes against Saudi Arabia over the past year.”
