U.S. warships transiting Taiwan Strait consistent with U.S. policy, according to White House aide

The transit of two US warships through international waters in the Taiwan Strait on Sunday is “quite consistent” with the US “one China policy” and pursuit of a free and open Indo-Pacific, according to a White House official.

“This was planned long ago,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said on CNN of the first crossing of the strait by US warships since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan earlier this month, which enraged China.

He described the two ships’ passage as “quite consistent with our one China policy, very consistent with our goal to ensure that we can continue to work toward a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
