In an apparent attempt to embarrass Moscow, Ukraine asked the frightened mothers of Russian troops taken on the battlefield to come and retrieve their sons on Wednesday.
The military ministry said in a statement that “a decision has been made to give over captured Russian troops to their moms if they come to collect them in Ukraine, in Kyiv.”
Kyiv claims to have seized dozens of Russian military a week into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and cellphone videos of befuddled and disarmed young men in uniform are circulating online.
Kyiv has opened a phone hotline for Russian parents to find out if their sons are among the dead or detained, in an attempt to undercut Russian public support for the invasion.
