Ukraine is hoping that a column of evacuees from the rubble of a massive steel works in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol would arrive in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia later Tuesday.
Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boichenko claimed more over 200 citizens remained at the Azovstal steel mill, where the city’s remaining defenders had taken refuge. According to him, over 100,000 inhabitants remained in the port city on the Sea of Azov.
On April 29, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross launched a coordinated effort with Ukraine and Russia to remove women, children, and the elderly from the steel complex.
