According to Bahia state police, a U.S. citizen who was wanted by authorities for allegedly attempting to knife his girlfriend and a taxi driver in Salvador, Brazil’s northeastern capital, committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping from a hotel room as they tried to apprehend him.
According to authorities, the American lodged at the hotel using fictitious documents, which made it challenging to find him once he was charged with more offenses in March of this year.
“When the police came and knocked on the door, he made the decision. Regretfully, he attempted to escape by jumping out of the window,” police officer Mariana Ouais stated, declining to reveal the suspect’s complete name.
The stabbings took place on Sunday in an upscale part of Salvador, police said, adding that the American had cut his hair in an attempt to disguise his identity.
Police had obtained an arrest warrant for the crimes of attempted murder and femicide.
“The permits for removal and forensics have been issued and the hotel staff will be interviewed,” Ouais said.
