The Venezuelan Armed Forces stated on Friday that a US military plane breached its airspace near the Colombian border in a “flagrant provocation.”
Venezuela, whose socialist government is subject to harsh US sanctions, has reported alleged airspace infractions on many times in recent years.
According to the report, a C-17 plane from the United States Air Force flew for three minutes over the Perija highlands in western Zulia state on Thursday evening.
“They are executing reconnaissance operations on Venezuelan geophysical space,” the Venezuelan armed forces stated in a statement. “As a result, we do not rule out other possible hostile actions that violate our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Requests for response from the US State Department were not immediately returned. Washington has pressed President Nicolas Maduro to resign, accusing him of corruption, human rights violations, and rigging his re-election in 2018.
