IOM: ‘Yemen is a dangerous place for stranded migrants’

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has described Yemen as a “dangerous place for stranded migrants” and has called to help immigrants “return to their homes safely”.

“ Yemen is a dangerous place for stranded migrants.” Helping them get home safely is a humanitarian imperative,” the IOM posted on Twitter. The IOM added that earlier on Tuesday, it had organised the second return flight from Aden to Addis Ababa since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, helping 160 stranded migrants return home with dignity.

Earlier on Monday, the organisation announced that as many as 34 migrants had tragically died off the coast of Djibouti after their boat had capsized. The migrants were being transported by people-smugglers.

According to the organisation, this is the second tragedy of its kind in just over a month, as 20 people have died and several others were injured in March.

In early March, the Houthi militia set fire to an immigrants detention facility in the capital, Sanaa, killing and wounding around 900 people.
