Iraq’s Ministry of Health and Environment has denied that it will suspend the use of the COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine in the country.

Public Health Director Riyad al-Halfi announced that the Ministry will not halt the shot, saying that such a decision would solely be taken by the World Health Organization (WHO).

He added that some countries have suspended the use of the shot, such as Denmark. Othes have, however, restricted it to certain ages.

Germany has halted the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for people younger than 50, France restricted it to ages between 40-50, while Italy halted to people below 60.

Iraq started vaccinating people with AstraZeneca in March when it received the first batch of 336,000 doses.

The Ministry of Health announced 25 new deaths, bringing the total to 16,885.

It confirmed 4,160 new infections on Sunday, raising the number to 1,284,465 since the beginning of the outbreak. Recoveries climbed to 1,200,103 after 3,989 people were reported virus-free.

Iraq has so far inoculated 770,010 people.
