OpenAI chaos not about AI safety, says Microsoft boss

Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, denied that the recent turmoil at OpenAI, where CEO Sam Altman was initially dismissed and later reinstated, was related to concerns over AI safety.

Smith stated that the issue was a divergence between the board and others and emphasized the strong partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft.

Altman’s reinstatement followed a significant funding boost from Microsoft, and his initial dismissal led to a company revolt.

The reasons for his sacking were not explicitly stated by the board, but they mentioned a lack of consistent candor in communications.

Microsoft is investing £2.5 billion in advanced data centers in the UK to support innovation and competition in AI.

Smith also dismissed fears of AI overtaking humans in the next year, asserting that it would take many years, if not decades.
