Congress Members call on Biden not to skip them in nuclear matters

With the imminent return of the nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran, US President Joe Biden is facing protests from members of Congress, especially Republicans, against this approach.

However, Western diplomatic sources said to Sawt Beirut International (SBI): “It is unlikely that the Congress members will be able to fully pressure the administration to retract the agreement with Iran, because Biden is not signing a new agreement, but rather revitalizing the previous one signed in 2015, and Washington withdrew from it in 2018 during the tenure of President Donald Trump.”

The administration’s position is clear in its focus on Iran and that a return to the agreement with it must take place.

Western sources detailed the reasons behind the Congress members’ objection, who are minority, but could exercise more pressure if they win the midterm elections in Congress next November. The most prominent elements of their messages to Biden are:

Washington’s return to the nuclear agreement with Iran takes place without submitting it to Congress as required by law. Americans will have the opportunity to review the agreement through Congress, especially since this return will lead to releasing tens of millions of dollars to the greatest power participating in terrorism, and will lift sanctions against terrorists whose hands are stained with blood.

Members of Congress have learned that President Joe Biden is about to bypass the Congress, by considering that the understanding is a kind of “completing” or “reworking” the action plan for that, which was subject to the position of Congress in 2015. This is what they do not accept, because any agreement that binds the US must be subject to congressional opinion.

The facts imposed by Iran through its nuclear program after the Unites State’s withdrawal, require a different approach, because  it is not possible to accept a mere “re-work” of the American plan, in order to prevent any Iranian non-commitment to stop what it has achieved in this era until now.

Ignoring the Congress means repeating the mistakes of former US President Barack Obama, as Iran must dismantle its nuclear capabilities, which prevents it from building a nuclear bomb. The US President cannot give Congress a guarantee on that. Before that, Iran must stop its terrorist acts, release all American detainees, and pay the costs of the trial of American victims that resulted from the Iranian regime’s terrorism.

The Congress will drop any agreement that should have been presented to it, and will drop all secret understandings contained in the agreement, as achieved in meetings on the sidelines of the negotiations in Vienna.

They will work through Congress to re-impose sanctions on Iran related to human rights, ballistic missiles, terrorism and others related to the Central Bank of Iran and the National Oil Company.

The Congress will re-attempt to re-designate the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization and to expand sanctions on all entities affiliated with Iran, and work to refocus on UN Resolution 2231 on the sanctions imposed by the Security Council on Iran.
