Four migrants die after falling from speedboat yards from beach in Spain’s Cadiz

In Cadiz, southern Spain, four migrants perished after plunging from a speedboat yards from a beach, the nation’s maritime rescue agency reported on Wednesday.

Twenty-three of the 27 immigrants on the boat made it to their destination alive.

Images of a black inflatable speedboat circling in strong tides off the beach and people on board shoving others off the side so they may start swimming in the swell have been shared on social media and reported by local media; Reuters has not yet verified the veracity of these images.

As people on the beach run to help, the boat is seen speeding away.

Another eight adult male migrants were left on the shore of Sancti Petri beach, in nearby Chiclana, who were attended to by medical personnel and the Guardia Civil police, the reports said, before three of their number were transported to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

Cadiz is on the southern tip of Spain, around 20 km (12 miles) from the North African coast.
