EU states step up pressure on Pfizer to cut unneeded COVID vaccine supplies

According to EU officials and a document, European Union governments are increasing pressure on Pfizer and other COVID-19 vaccine producers to renegotiate contracts, saying that millions of unnecessary doses might be wasted.

During the most severe period of the pandemic, the European Commission and EU countries decided to purchase massive quantities of vaccinations, principally from Pfizer and its partner BioNTech, due to concerns about a lack of supply.

However, with the epidemic in Europe subsiding and vaccinations slowing, several governments are now seeking contract changes to restrict supply and, as a result, slash vaccine costs.
