Hungarian parliament empowers government to hold referendum on LGBT issues

On Tuesday, Hungary’s parliament passed a resolution authorizing the government to organize a referendum on LGBT issues, as Prime Minister Viktor Orban prepares for a difficult election campaign next year.

Orban, a nationalist in power since 2010, requested a vote earlier this year on ruling party legislation that bans school instruction about homosexuality and transgender problems, escalating a culture war with the European Union.
