Tunisian parliament speaker refuses to suspend parliament for another year

Rached Ghannouchi, the speaker of Tunisia’s parliament, announced on Thursday that he would not suspend the legislature for another year.

According to a message on his Facebook page, Ghannouchi, also the leader of the Ennahda party, underlined that the only way out of the current issue was “the immediate revocation of special measures” declared by the president.

Tunisian President Kais Saied said on December 13 that he will hold a constitutional referendum in July of next year, followed by parliamentary elections at the end of 2022.
