Felix Aburdene combines reggae with Arabic instruments in “Jamaican Jallab”

Felix Aburdene, who is also know as “Dub Caravan”, is a composer, music producer and multi instrumentalist who resides in London, UK.

He always lived a conflicted between the world of western music and Arabic music ever since he was a little kid. His father is Palestinian, originally from the city of Bethlehem, and his great uncle was the well-known Palestinian composer Riyad Bandak, who had written songs for famous singers, such as Georges Wassouf.

Felix Aburdene has always had a deep interest in Jamaican reggae music as well as the ambition to blend it with classical Arabic instruments and scales.

Although the term “Arabic Reggae” has existed for awhile, it usually consisted of just a vocalist singing in Arabic over western reggae music with little to no Arabic instruments involved. Reggae has very rarely been orchestrated in a way that would incorporate many classical Arabic instruments in the same musical work. However, Felix Aburdene’s latest music video is doing just that. “Jamaican Jallab” is a track that combines the Jamaican reggae with Arabic classical instruments. The instrumental features are handled by two extraordinary musicians from Syria – Mohamad Fityan playing Ney and Youssef Nassif playing Qanun. The music was composed and arranged by Felix Aburdene. He also plays the rest of the instruments, which include the oud, darbuka, drums, bass and piano.

This is his third track styled in the genre of “Arabic Reggae”. Previously he’s released the instrumental “Reggae Sharqi” (featuring Mohamad Fityan on ney) and “Manama” with the Jordanian singer and artist Amer Al Taher also known as “Al Mukhtar”. Felix’s solo album titled “Roots Sikah” was released in March 2021, it combines Arabic Dabke and Arabic folk music with electronic futuristic sounds.
