Gasoline price hike fuels anger among citizens

The President of the Republic Michel Aoun in the presence of Finance Minister Youssef Khalil, received the General Manager of “Alvarez and Marcel” James Daniel, who briefed him on the company’s intention to start forensic audit for the accounts of the Central Bank after completing all related arrangements.

The sharp rise in gasoline prices, which surpassed 300,000 LBP, has sparked anger among Lebanese, were protesters spread in several areas. This situation is likely to cause a social explosion especially that the working class has lost its patience while waiting for the government’s emergency treatments. But until today, neither the expected financing card nor the plan to support the public transport sector has appeared.

Amid the official abandonment of dealing with these crises, the workers are preparing to take the initiative, as a number of public car drivers blocked the roads for traffic in protest against the rise in the gasoline prices.

To get informed about the plans of the land transport sector in the face of rising prices, the Head of the Land Transport Sector Federations and Unions Bassam Tlais joined us via phone.

The Head of the General Labor Union, Bechara Asmar, called on all economic bodies, civil society, the Union Coordination Committee and the free profession unions, for a meeting to be held next week to take appropriate steps and decisions for forms of action such as sit-ins, demonstrations and strikes, to stop the deterioration. Asmar blamed officials, and parliamentary blocs for the repercussions of the humanitarian, social, economic, health and educational catastrophe that is taking place.”

Asmar pointed out that the price of a can of gasoline will touch the 400,000 LBP in the coming weeks, which will lead to complete paralysis of the economic movement, the inability of employees in the public and private sectors to go to work, slowing and stopping the economic movement and a major social explosion.
