France has progressed from spearheading Lebanese presidential elections to serving as G5 commissioner

The French presidential envoy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, returns to Lebanon on a second “pilgrimage” trip, but with a different role, since the Macron administration has lost the exclusivity of the initiative after the five-party meeting in Qatar, which was strict towards those who obstruct the process of electing the President of the Republic and the measures that will be taken against them.

It is clear, according to a former diplomatic source, that the opposition team senses changes, albeit relatively, in the regional and international public scene regarding Lebanon, and it has been proven that the French role has receded from a spearhead to a delegate of the Group of Five countries, with the aim of extrapolating and exploring the Lebanese positions, and the backgrounds of the Iranian and Syrian positions, and through them “Hezbollah”.

Therefore, the word returned strongly to Washington, even if the latter is keen to distance itself from engaging in any repulsive positions or debates on the Lebanese level, but certainly the Group of Five is radically linked to the Americans despite the rhetoric and guesses that are not based on any facts, or about the decline of the American role, whether in Lebanon or in the region.

The source adds that the 4 partner countries in the Group of Five are allies of the United States of America, and no matter how wide the circle of openness they have, especially with regard to Egypt or with regard to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, these countries cannot deviate from the American security and political umbrella.

It is clear that “Hezbollah” lacks a comprehensive reading of the dimensions of the five countries’ last statement, in light of the emergence of signs ranging from surprise and shock to the party regarding the aforementioned statement, which initiated a studied language that was not devoid of intimidation, but through which it sought to feel the pulse of the opposition forces, and the extent of their readiness, instead of intimidation as usual and without a ceiling.

Based on these data, the source believes that “Hezbollah” is facing confusion. Thus, he’d rather be cautious and not engage in any initiatives.

In any case, “Hezbollah” considers that the dialogue is based on its proposals and its candidate and not on new and creative proposals.
