Biggest protest in Spain against Catalan amnesty law draws 170,000

In what was perhaps the greatest demonstration against an amnesty law that Spain’s Socialists agreed upon over Catalonia’s 2017 secessionist push in order to form a government, over 170,000 people marched through Madrid on Saturday while waving Spanish flags.

The protest, the most recent in a string of anti-amnesty demonstrations in Spanish cities, was held two days after socialist Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, was re-elected to a four-year term with the support of Catalan and Basque nationalist parties in exchange for signing the legislation.

Holding signs that read “Sanchez traitor” and “Don’t sell Spain”, protesters demonstrated against the law which four judicial associations, opposition political parties and business leaders said threatens the rule of law and the separation of powers.

Authorities put the number of demonstrators at 170,000.

Alberto Nunez Feijoo, leader of the opposition conservative People’s Party, and Santiago Abascal, leader of the far-right Vox party, also attended the march which was organised by civil groups.
