Iran denounces UN decision and resorts to its frozen funds

Iran condemned, on Friday, what it called the “flawed and unacceptable” trend towards denying it a vote in the United Nations General Assembly due to its non-payment of financial arrears, while the Foreign Ministry said it was considering transferring its frozen funds in South Korea to the international organization.

The New York Times  said that this “incident” that provoked Iranian anger will negatively affect diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations related to the nuclear file between Iran and the major powers.

Indirect talks are taking place between Iran and the United States, regarding the two countries’ return to full compliance with the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 between Tehran and world powers.

And recently, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for the application of Article 19 of the Charter of the International Organization, which provides for the suspension of the right to vote for every country equal to its arrears or more than the value of the contributions incurred in the past two years.

Tehran attributes its arrears to the United Nations ($16.2 million in February) to US financial sanctions re-imposed by former President Donald Trump in 2018, which deprive Iran of the global financial system, according to AFP.

Zarif said in a letter to Guterres, posted on his Twitter account, Thursday, that his country “refuses” to suspend its vote, and “the resolution is fundamentally flawed, totally unacceptable and unjustified, because Iran’s inability to meet its financial dues to the United Nations is a direct result.” to US sanctions.

The imposition of US economic sanctions again on Iran came as a result of former President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision in 2018 to remove Washington from the international nuclear agreement concluded with Iran in Vienna in 2015.

Zarif added that the inability to pay was “totally beyond the will” of Iran, which is willing to pay its debts, and urged the UN administration to “remain faithful to the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and refrain from any decision that challenges the principle of sovereign equality among states and impedes the multilateral approach.”
