What’s happening in the Motor Inspection Vehicle?

Legitimate bribery has become a reality in Lebanon. This is what is happening in the motor inspection centers on various Lebanese territories.

Videos obtained by Sawt Beirut International (SBI) showed that a number of employees, who are covered by some officials, are communicating with citizens who want to conduct motor inspection and do not want to wait more than 10 hours. Employees at the motor inspection vehicle request an amount ranging between 300,000 and 350,000 Lebanese pounds, in exchange for clearing the transaction and issuing a valid driving certificate.

A source following the file told SBI that the failure of the Lebanese state to provide any solution amid the deteriorating income of the employees has prompted them to take this step.

But what does motor inspection mean? Is the citizen able to bear the cost of repairing the car in light of this collapse?

Inspection means detecting: 133 points, including 524 parts, 264 of them require re-examination.

Ten of these parts are considered essential and the car cannot skip inspection without it, for instance, brakes, windshields, lights, signals, etc…

The figures show that there is a drop in the number of cars that paid the due fees, as it dropped from 850,000 cars in 2017, to 617,000 in 2018, to 980,000 cars in 2019. As for the year 2020, about 648,000 cars were subjected to mechanical inspection, and about 530,000 cars in 2021.
