Samir Geagea, leader of the Lebanese Forces (LF) party, announced on Wednesday that Syrians residing in Lebanon who will vote for President Bashar al-Assad in tomorrow’s presidential elections should be asked to leave Beirut immediately.

“Tens of thousands of displaced Syrians in Lebanon are set to participate tomorrow in the tragic farce called the ‘Syrian presidential elections’ at the Syrian embassy’s headquarters in Hazmieh,” Geagea said in a statement.

“The definition of a displaced person is clear and internationally recognized; it is someone who left his country due to a force majeure and security threats preventing him from staying therein.”

“Therefore, we ask the President of the Republic and the caretaker Prime Minister to give the needed instructions to the ministries of interior and defense and the concerned administrations in order to get full lists containing the names of those who will vote for Assad tomorrow and therefore, ask them to leave Lebanon immediately.”

The LF leader said the ones who will vote in favor of Assad should be asked to “join the areas controlled by the Assad regime in Syria as long as they will vote for this regime and it does not pose a threat to them.”

Earlier, the Lebanese Army Command – Orientation Directorate said the Syrian presidential elections will be held on May 20 as from 6:00 AM, noting that Syrians residing in Lebanon will be voting at their country’s embassy in Yarze near the Lebanese Ministry of National Defense.

“Therefore, the Army Command will be taking security measures along Al Sham road in the area extending from Al-Siyyed to Al-Jamhour, and calls on the Lebanese people to comply with the security forces’ instructions to avoid congestion in the mentioned place and time.”

On April 21, Bashar al-Assad submitted documents to run for a fourth term in an election scheduled for May 26, parliament’s speaker said on state media.

Assad’s family and his Baath party have ruled Syria for five decades with the help of the security forces and the army, where his Alawite minority dominate.

This year is the 10th anniversary of a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters which triggered a civil war that has left much of Syria in ruins.
