Member of Parliament and Development and Liberation Parliamentary Bloc Member Ali Hassan Khalil said during a public meeting of municipal councils in Jabal Amel organized by “Amal Movement” that the country is facing an exceptional and complex crisis on more than one level, and that some are still acting as if no problem facing the basic livelihood of citizens.

Khalil pointed out that “during the past days, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri made a series of contacts, but unfortunately the parties concerned with resolving the crisis are still sticking to their opinion, which leads to the suspension and postponement of the solution. He added: “the calamity is that some ignore the depth of this crisis.”

“We are still at a standstill,” he regretted, revealing that “there has been a movement during the past few days to search for common denominators in order to reach a solution and a settlement, but we are still stuck with the third veto power obstacle, which for us denotes suicide and assassination of the homeland.”

Khalil considered that some sides are still adhering to their conditions of obtaining a certain quota within the government formation, while in reality, having a plus or minus cabinet seat will not save a particular team from being held accountable by the people.

“Today, we are facing a huge challenge due to deteriorating political, economic, social, financial and other conditions. We must be, as we have always been, at forefront of confrontation and rise to the call of duty…Therefore, the municipal councils are today the backbone of social work related to people’s lives and their future,” Khalil corroborated.

He also touched on “the environmental challenge posed by the Israeli environmental attacks on our sea, territorial waters and coastline, in light of a paralyzed government and a caretaker government that evades its responsibility to accord attention to this problem, as we have not seen any position by the Minister of Environment, which calls for accountability and reflects betrayal in assuming responsibilities.”

Khalil continued to note that “had it not been for individual initiatives, the most important of which are those of municipalities, municipal unions, and political forces, the scene would be dark and gloomy.”
