European Union: We expect the elected House of Representatives to act responsibly

The European Union welcomed the holding of the parliamentary elections in Lebanon, and praised, in a statement, “the Lebanese who voted and who participated in the preparation and implementation of the electoral process, for the sense of citizenship they showed through their participation in it, despite the difficult political, economic and social circumstances surrounding these elections.”

He also praised the “security forces for their contribution to maintaining a calm and safe environment in general, and for helping to ensure that elections are held without major security incidents.”

The statement added: “The European Union has contributed to making these elections possible, by providing extensive technical assistance to electoral management bodies and by dispatching an election observation mission.

He continued: “We expect the elected House of Representatives to support a rapid process of government formation, and to act responsibly and constructively to serve Lebanon and its people by adopting all legislation and implementing the necessary reforms to improve governance and economic stability, and contributing to the implementation of the prior procedures required in the staff-level agreement signed on 7. Last April with the International Monetary Fund in order to start a program for the Fund.”

He concluded: “We reiterate our expectations that the presidential and municipal elections will be held on time, in line with Lebanon’s democratic principles, traditions and commitments. The European Union will continue to stand by Lebanon and its people.
