Lebanon draws up ‘roadmap’ to end row with Saudis, Presidency reports

According to a tweet from the Lebanese presidency, Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated on Thursday that he and President Michel Aoun had agreed on a “roadmap” to resolve a diplomatic conflict with Saudi Arabia.

He didn’t go into much depth.

Lebanon is experiencing its greatest schism with oil-rich Gulf Arab states yet, sparked by statements made by Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi prior to his official appointment about the Saudi-led involvement in Yemen.

In an interview he said was recorded on Aug. 5, Kordahi said Yemen was subjected to aggression and that its Iran-aligned Houthis were defending themselves.

Saudi Arabia and some Gulf Arab allies reacted angrily to the remarks.

Riyadh expelled Lebanon’s ambassador, banned all imports from Lebanon and recalled its envoy for consultations.

Lebanon is suffering a financial and economic meltdown which the World Bank has labelled as one of the deepest depressions of modern history.
