MPs charged over Beirut blast re-elected, troubling families of victims

Two Lebanese parliamentarians indicted in connection with the 2020 Beirut port explosion were re-elected in the first election after the disaster, raising concerns among victims’ relatives about further delays in the inquiry into the explosion.

Many in Lebanon blame the accident, which killed more than 215 people, on senior political and security leaders’ failures to ensure safety. Accountability for the bombing has emerged as a key issue for opposition politicians and supporters.

Ali Hassan Khalil and Ghazi Zeaiter, both standing with the Hezbollah-backed Shi’ite Amal Movement, won seats in Baalbek-Hermel and south Lebanon, according to Interior Ministry data.

Khalil and Zeaiter were accused in December 2020, although they deny any wrongdoing and have refused to appear at questioning hearings, citing immunity provided by their parliamentary positions.

Because the investigations are ongoing, the specific charges against them have not been made public.
