N.Korea boosts production of drugs, medical supplies to battle COVID

As it faces an unprecedented coronavirus outbreak, North Korea is increasing production of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment such as sterilizers and thermometers, according to official media KCNA on Thursday.

According to KCNA, the isolated country, which has enforced a statewide lockdown, is also raising manufacturing of traditional Korean medications used to relieve fever and discomfort, which are “effective in prevention and cure of the malevolent sickness.”

A broad COVID outbreak, first announced by North Korea last week, has fueled fears about a shortage of medical facilities and immunizations, with the United Nations human rights agency warning of “devastating” repercussions for the country’s 25 million people.

As of Wednesday evening, at least 262,270 more people had reported fever symptoms, and one more person had died, according to KCNA, citing statistics from the state emergency epidemic prevention headquarters. It was unclear how many people tested positive for the infection.

North Korea has recorded 1,978,230 persons with fever symptoms and 63 fatalities thus far, and has instituted severe anti-virus measures.

Factories in Pyongyang and adjacent regions are producing more injections, medications, thermometers, and other medical supplies “with breakneck speed,” according to KCNA, while new isolation wards have been erected and disinfection work has been stepped up around the nation.
